Pet cameras are sold on resolution, but resolution is rarely what makes one useful. Here is a practical framework for comparing them.
Night vision is the first spec to check
A camera without usable infrared illumination only works during the day, which defeats the purpose for most owners. Look for an explicit infrared (IR) range, usually quoted in metres, and check whether the image switches to monochrome automatically when light drops.
Field of view decides how much you actually see
A narrow lens pointed at a feeding station is fine for watching one bowl. A wider lens covers a room but shrinks detail. Wide-angle lenses also introduce distortion at the edges, which matters if you plan to identify your pet from across the room.
Two bands, one gotcha
Many cameras connect only on 2.4 GHz. If your router broadcasts a single merged network name, initial setup can fail repeatedly with unhelpful errors. Confirm the supported bands before buying, and if your home has many devices, check whether 5 GHz is also available for streaming.
Pan and tilt versus fixed
Motorised pan and tilt let you sweep a room remotely, but the mechanism is one more moving part that can wear out, and the motors are audible. A fixed camera plus a wider lens is simpler and quieter.
Storage and subscriptions
Decide early whether recordings should live on a local card, on a cloud service, or not at all. Cloud features are often behind a paid plan; a camera that becomes a paperweight without a subscription is a different product from one that works standalone.
Audio and alerts
Two-way audio is useful for settling a pet; motion alerts are useful only if they can be tuned, otherwise you will disable them within a week. Look for adjustable sensitivity and, ideally, zone-based detection.
What to check before you buy
Confirm the plug type and voltage for your country, the app’s availability in your region, and the return window. Electronics fail, and after-sales terms matter more than a small price difference.
