Description
Why this one works
- Absorbent surface that soaks up the first step instead of spreading water across the tiles.
- Non-slip backing – the problem with cheap mats is that they slide, not that they are thin.
- Machine washable, which is the only realistic way to keep a bathroom mat fresh.
- Low profile, so a bathroom door still clears it.
- Soft underfoot on cold tile floors.

Buying guide
1. The backing matters more than the pile
Almost every complaint about a bathroom mat is a sliding complaint. A mat with a proper grip underside stays put on tile, and a mat without one will slide the moment the floor is wet – which is exactly when you are least able to catch yourself. Check the underside before the colour.
2. Absorbency versus drying time
A very thick mat absorbs more but takes longer to dry, and a mat that stays damp smells. A medium pile that feels dry again within a few hours is a better choice for a bathroom with limited ventilation than the thickest thing on the shelf.
3. Wash it or replace it
Bathroom mats are one of the few textiles where washing is genuinely non-negotiable. A machine-washable mat at a moderate temperature, dried properly, lasts years. A mat that cannot be washed is a consumable.
4. Sizing the step-out zone
Measure the width of the shower or bath opening and add about 20-30 cm each side. A mat narrower than the opening means the first step lands on bare tile; one much wider is mostly in the way of the door.
5. Where not to put one
Avoid laying a mat directly against a wall that stays wet, and do not layer a mat over another mat – the top one slides on the bottom one. If the floor drains poorly, a slightly raised slatted mat solves a different problem entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Will it slide on wet tile?
The non-slip backing is designed to grip a wet tiled floor. As with any mat, keep the underside clean – dust and hair on the backing reduce grip more than water does.
Can I put it in the washing machine?
Yes. Wash at a moderate temperature on a normal cycle and dry it flat or on a low tumble. High heat is what shortens the life of the backing.
How long does it take to dry?
A medium pile mat is usually dry within a few hours in a normally ventilated bathroom. In a windowless bathroom, hang it over the bath edge between uses.
Does it come in several sizes?
